There seem to be two schools of thought when learning about a topic or skill:

One: We must start with the basics and work from there until we are ready for more advanced work and that basically mastery should be a gradual progression from the basics to the complicated stuff. A linear process.

Two: Just jump in anywhere and since everything’s connected, you’ll eventually get what you need to get! A random process.

I offer a third option…

LET’S DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!

Three: Starting with more advanced concepts and practices mixed in with the “basics” actually can bring mastery sooner and in a more integrated way. A circular, spirally looped process.

In this series we will look at the vocal basics:

• Breathing, resonance, posture, registers, vocal versatility, vocal qualities, styles, dynamics, short notes, long notes, acoustics, etc.

AND we will look at them from broader perspectives simultaneously:

• Integration, learning, systems thinking, connection, perception, interoception, function, etc.
• Mix it up!
• Challenge the linear model of learning and skill acquisition!

Taken together we can have the best of both worlds! We can get a sense of the basics without losing sight of the big picture of the entire singing self and we can develop our sense of our BIG SINGING SELF while understanding, looking at and working with the so-called “basics”!
